What changed
- August 2025: CDCA‑WREB‑CITA merged into ADEX. The combined organization is the American Board of Dental Examiners (ADEX), which develops and gives the exam. Its website is adextesting.org.
- August 1, 2026: the DLOSCE, made by the ADA's Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations, became the computer‑based part of the ADEX dental exam. It replaced the DSE OSCE.
- August 1, 2026: the periodontal exam became a required clinical part.
- After October 9, 2026: the DLOSCE is no longer given on its own. New candidates take it as part of the ADEX series.
Prep material that still teaches the DSE OSCE, or separate CDCA and WREB exams, is out of date for anyone testing now.

What's on the exam now
The ADEX dental exam has a computer part and clinical parts on a simulated patient (a manikin).
- The DLOSCE, on a computer: single‑response and multiple‑response multiple choice, prescription‑writing tasks and questions that use 3D models you can rotate.
- Periodontal, on a manikin.
- Endodontic, on a manikin.
- Prosthodontic, on a manikin.
- Anterior restorative and posterior restorative, on a manikin.
The ADEX dental exam's parts. On a computer: the DLOSCE, with single and multiple response multiple choice, prescription writing and rotatable 3D models. On a manikin: periodontal, endodontic, prosthodontic, anterior restorative and posterior restorative.
ADEX's candidate manuals set the rules for retakes and for how long you have to pass every part. Read the current manual before you register; the rules are the same for every state that uses the exam.
Which states use it
The ADA says 48 states and other jurisdictions accept or require the ADEX dental exam. Some states also accept other clinical exams, such as CRDTS, or other routes such as a residency year. Your state board decides, so check it before you register.
CRDTS gives its own dental exam: a written treatment planning part (Part I) and manikin parts for endodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics with an OSCE, and restorative dentistry.
How to prepare for the DLOSCE
- Start with ADEX's own test prep page: the DLOSCE practice questions, the list of acronyms and abbreviations, and the 3D model tutorial.
- Practice reading radiographs, photos and charts quickly. Most DLOSCE items start from an image or a model.
- Practice multiple‑response items, where you must pick every correct answer, and writing prescriptions.
- Get comfortable rotating and reading 3D models before test day.
- Do at least 1 timed run so the pace isn't new on the day.
